Bard Global Degree student Mulki Mohamed Ali ’27, graduate of the Bard Hubs for Connected Learning Initiative, published an academic article through Oxford University’s Refugee Led Research Hub. Her paper is titled “Will We Become Kenyans?: South Sudanese cultural practises and prospects of integration in the Kakuma Refugee Camp.” Analyzing Sudanese refugees’ concerns about integration, Ali finds that they are primarily fearful of cultural erosion. “Humanitarian organisations should support cultural continuity by funding cultural materials and attire for a wider range of groups, including minority communities, and by providing safe, accessible spaces for community-led gatherings,” she concludes. Ali also collaborated on the 2024 short film The Bridge, a fictional retelling of refugee circumstances in Kakuma, and she cofounded the refugee-led arts organization Photofilm4Change.

The Bard Global Degree Program is a synchronous online degree program for students displaced or threatened by conflict, crisis, or political repression who have little or no access to a rigorous liberal arts education. Global Degree students enroll in the same Associates and Bachelors of Arts degree programs as Bard Annandale students, and may earn academic certificates and graduate with accredited Bard associate’s and bachelor’s degrees.
